Delete Your Own Video Comments

We're happy to announce the launch of a feature many of you have been asking for: you now have the ability to delete comments you've made on videos. We've all been there. Whether you misspelled "pwned", back in the day when you were just a n00b to the internets, or you simply said something you wish you could take back - now you can remove your commentary at any time.

The Abuse & Safety tool is here for you to resolve issues like harassment and bullying. This new feature will empower you to more easily and effectively handle these types of situations, without needing help from staff. Of course, we always encourage everyone to think things through before posting comments anywhere on the site. But if you don't get it right the first time, now you can simply delete your comment. To remove a comment that you've made, go to the "Text Comments" section below the video and click the "Remove" button next to your comment.

Helping you check yourself,

The YouTube Team

I have a criticism\suggestion: removing your own comments means that debates can become worthless. I mean sensible debates, which do occasionally happen amidst the fagging and the trolling and the poorly spelled diatribes. If someone can effectively go back in time and remove something they've said, all foundations for discussion will erode.

Any chance of specifying which author removed their comment so they can be called on it?

I'm aware this sounds petty, but I guarantee the removal feature will get this kind of abuse.

Anyway. Thanks.

Thats a great update. I like that idea because of the fact that if somebody gets on to your channel, you can just delete the comments on the videos that you made. I've been wishing for that to happen. Yours faithfully: Jamie Marriner of CrippleMania

P.S: WOOOOOOOOOOO

Finally! YouTube has found the postive side on adding a new feature. Removing our comments. Great update!! When ever you make a spelling mistake, you can just remove your own comment and edit your comment. About damn time! Thanks YouTube!! Also, keep this good updates up and I will give respect to you.

We've all been there. Whether you've been a prick, or just completely wrong - now you can rest assured you will no longer have to claim responsibility for your actions.

I concur with Th1sWasATriumph, actually it was the first thought that came into my head. But it is a useful feature.

I am a fan of 'The Young Turks' and it is no longer on 'YouTube', WHY? what happened to it - if it wasn't for 'TYT' I probaly would not tune in daily for the updates.
If it's not going to be restored then I definately know I won't be coming here - on the daily.

why did you add this feature? Please remove it!

It shows what kind of a person you are. Why should someone be so abusive in someone's video without reading the description in the first place?

Yes, it would be good to change what you've done in the past, but live with it! If I can remove the comments I've done in the past, why can't I change the bad things I've done in my life O_o.

I mean, people will just abuse this feature, if people know they can't change their comments, in future they'll learn to be more respectful without saying bad stuff first.

By the way...what is this new Annotation thing?

I guess there will be a mass surge in people deleting their comments which have been given negative feedback - and It will make discussions harder to follow - please no one reply too this post, because I may delete it in a few days lol

Just a query- If someone deletes their comment, but the video poster/replyee still has comment email-notifications enabled, will they still get the email about what the comment said? Especially with the speedy connection between YouTube and Gmail, there's really no time to modify these messages accordingly, so in a way the comment or reply will still be recieved. What then?

Nice feature, but I am wondering why I can no longer view comments with high negative ratings. I can no longer find out what someone said to get someone else angry. lol

Superwaluigi64 said...

To AndyTheEnglishman: Just select "all comments" in the comment viewing bar.

Yes, this will be interesting - to see how it plays out - I tend to agree that we should consider the gravity of what we say before we post, knowing it is permanently displayed. But then, when I want comment-forgiveness for myself, I'll sure be glad it's there!

emma2006 said...

what about the comments on people's profiles?

captainjack63 said...

@YouTube Team. It would be nice to have other friends help manage comments. When you get over 100 or even 1,000 comments its a big time consumer to manage all that without some help from others. Could you add a feature to authorize some friends to edit/delete those comments?

kerrianne001 said...

Great that YouTube is moving with the times - it drives me crazy if I 've made a comment and it's mispeled! LOL. Kerrianne. http://www.Vision-to-Reality.com
